ANGANWADI. Vishnumangalam is the village my father was born in. Growing up, I spent most of my summers in this quiet village, close to the coastal town of Vadakara in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. In Feb 2017, on learning that one of my family members supervised an Anganwadi Center in the village, I was immediately curious. Having heard horrific stories of corruption and the pathetic state of some of the Anganwadi's across India, justifiably I wanted to witness the functioning of the Anganwadi center in my very own village.
Anganwadi or "Courtyard shelter" forms a part of the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) program and was started by the Indian government in 1975 with the aim to combat hunger and malnutrition for underprivileged children. In addition to free supplementary nutrition for children below that age of six, the centers are also expected to provide basic pre-school education.
held their annual Marathon event in Wadi Rum. The new event added this year was the 100Km Ultramarathon from the City of Petra to Wadi Rum. I travelled with the main runners and shared their journey as they ran 100 KM through the deserts of Jordan. Later, at the end of the race, we sat down and talked about how they do it.
